Amazon To Resume Sales Of Apple TV, Google Chromecast

In a reversal of policies, (NASDAQ:AMZN) has announced that it will soon begin selling the Apple TV set-top box and Google Chromecast on its popular online site again. Both the Apple TV and Chromecast were pulled from Amazon in late 2015. The devices compete with its own Fire TV products.

Amazon has added product listing pages for the Apple TV and two versions of the Apple TV 4K, as well as the Google Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra. While listings are now back on the site, Amazon has not yet begun accepting orders. The company has said that it intends to begin accepting orders in the near future.

The two streaming devices have not been sold on Amazon’s site for more than two years. At the time, Amazon claimed the decision was made because neither of the devices offered “a direct, convenient way to view Amazon Prime Video content.” Amazon released a Prime Video app for Apple TV for the first time earlier this month, but still doesn’t support Chromecast.

Amazon and Google have repeatedly clashed over the availability of their products on each other’s services. The retailer’s long-running refusal to sell Google-branded products and some newer devices from its Nest subsidiary has cause a great deal of friction between the two companies. Google said, “We’ve been trying to reach agreement with Amazon to give consumers access to each other’s products and services.”

Google recently announced that it would be pulling YouTube from Fire TV streaming devices as of January 1st. Google claimed a “lack of reciprocity” from Amazon was behind the move. YouTube has already been pulled from the Echo Show. Amazon responded to the announcement by claiming that Google was “selectively blocking customer access to an open website.”

It’s currently unclear if the change will push Google to resume YouTube support on Amazon’s devices. A Google spokesperson said, “We are in productive discussions with Amazon to reach an agreement for the benefit of our mutual customers. We hope we can reach an agreement to resolve these issues soon.” Amazon has not said whether it will now sell Google Home speakers and resume sales of new Nest devices along with Chromecast gadgets.

  1. Google should not yet give in on YouTube with the Fire. Amazon still has Google Home and new Nest hardware banned across their entire marketplace from any company selling. Fine if Amazon does not want to sell but not allowing anyone else is anti-competitive.

Plus Amazon hijacks the names of Google products and tries to sell theirs. Until Amazon fully ends their anti-competitive behavior Google should not give in.
